What is the perfect defense from the undead? Truthfully, there isn't one. A impenetrable fortress will not make zombies go away. Also surviving for long periods of time in one place is something many have forgotten. You cannot drive to the supermarket to pick up food and supplies. In defense physical protection is not the only thing to take into consideration.
Some things to consider in defense:
1. Immediate defense: The dead have risen. You smell smoke, hear sirens. Screams and shots fill the air.
- a. Lock all doors and windows. Windows will not stop zombies, but it shattering will be a good warning.
- b. Turn on the bathtub. You will need water, and there is no way of knowing when water will be cut.
- c. Find the best weapon possible. You will use it for the next hour.
- d. Stock pile the second floor with supplies.
- e. Destroy the staircase!
- f. If you have a ladder use it to continue to stock pile the second floor. Fill all containers with water.
- g. Stay out of sight. Make as little sound as possible, when it gets dark do not turn on the lights.
- h. Plan an alternative escape in case of fire or other compromising factors, have what you need to take with you ready.
2. Depending on the Class of zombie outbreak, different measures can be taken. For a Class 1, your house barricaded will be enough. A Class 2 will need more hardened defenses such as a 10 foot wall. Class 3 a home will not provide adequate defense for long, with your supplies dwindling.
3. Barricade or modify any means of entry into the house. Fortify it with materials that would keep normal humans out.
4. Depending on the scale, a chain link fence can keep zombies away for months as long as their numbers stay at class 1. For Class 1 or 2 outbreaks, a 10 foot cinder brick wall is the safest option. For Class 3 outbreaks, zombies will pile up against your wall until a ramp is created for them to come over.
5. A good form of defense if the zombies will eventually get into you home is to destroy your stair case to the second floor with all your supplies.
6. Keep a low profile. Cook in the basement if you have to. Always keep blackout shades over the windows, especially at night. Listen to your radio wearing headphones at all time. Always generate electricity using a modified bicycle to keep noise down, as gas powered generators are noisy and it's fuel is finite.
7. Eventually after things have settled down, you would have lasted long enough for a Class 1 or 2 outbreak. If however, yo uare facing a Class 3 outbreak, a fortress is needed. The first while will be chaotic, and once things have “settled” down, survivors would have organized, and only then should you start your search for a fortress.
